Spouse Sponsor Program helps families navigate PCS moves to USAG Wiesbaden

CLAY KASERNE, Germany - For military families, a permanent change of station move can be one of life's most significant transitions. Between coordinating logistics, navigating unfamiliar installations and establishing new routines, the process can feel overwhelming for Soldiers and spouses alike. To help ease that transition, U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden offers a Spouse Sponsor Program through Army Community Service.

The peer-to-peer program helps incoming families adjust to life in Germany by connecting them with experienced spouses who can offer practical guidance and support.

"ACS supports the entire military community by offering specialized sponsorship training for both spouses and Army civilians, recognizing that each plays an important role in the strength and resilience of USAG Wiesbaden," said Jeremy Plumley, interim ACS division chief.

"When people are connected early, both socially and professionally, it can make a real difference during a move," Plumley added. "Strong sponsorship helps ease some of the biggest challenges that come with relocation, including financial strain, high stress and feelings of isolation."

Some spouses are navigating Army life for the first time, while others are experienced military family members facing their first overseas assignment. Spouse sponsors provide tailored guidance based on real experience and an understanding of each family's unique circumstances.

Sponsors help incoming families settle in by answering questions about life in Germany, including local customs, shopping rules, recycling and quiet hours. They also guide families through on-post services such as the passport office, housing, vehicle registration and Tricare.

In addition, they share insight on Department of War Education Activity schools and childcare options, connect spouses with employment resources, and offer recommendations on grocery stores, veterinarians, doctors and travel destinations.

"As a military spouse, I know firsthand how overwhelming a PCS can be," said Lorena Hernandez, a military spouse and experienced sponsor. "A sponsor provides personalized information based on your family's needs and experiences, helping make the transition much smoother. Instead of searching through endless websites and trying to figure everything out on your own, you have someone who understands the installation and your specific situation."

Many sponsors connect with incoming families before they arrive at their new duty station, helping turn an uncertain move into a more manageable transition.

"Many spouses are assigned a sponsor before they even arrive," Hernandez said. "This allows us to help them prepare for their move. We can assist them with their relocation checklist, answer questions about what to expect, and make sure they have the correct documents and information before they travel."

Communication takes place through each family's preferred method, including messaging apps, email, phone calls or text messages.

Sponsors are not assigned at random. Whenever possible, families are matched based on similarities such as rank, children, pets or lifestyle.

"For example, an E-7 spouse is usually paired with another E-7 spouse," Hernandez said. "They also try to match families based on demographics, such as whether they have children, pets or similar lifestyles."

The impact of spouse sponsorship extends beyond answering logistical questions. Sponsors often become the first point of contact and sometimes the first friend a new spouse has at a duty station.

"They help set the tone for the family's experience by making them feel welcome and helping them become part of the community," Hernandez said. "A positive sponsorship experience can make a stressful PCS much easier and helps families feel connected from the very beginning."

USAG Wiesbaden started the Spouse Sponsorship program in 2022 and has since trained and assigned 147 sponsors to incoming spouses.

"By helping military members and their families navigate the transition to a new duty station, sponsorship creates a strong foundation for them to settle in quickly and successfully," Plumley said. "That early support makes it easier for families to adjust, build connections, and feel supported from the start, which ultimately helps ensure personnel are ready to focus on the mission from day one."

Becoming a spouse sponsor does not require prior expertise, only a willingness to help. Through the Relocation Readiness Program, sponsors receive training and resources toprovide accurate information, connect families with community services, and help shape a smoother transition at a new installation.

While incoming spouses benefit from personalized guidance, local knowledge and a trusted point of contact, sponsorship also benefits those who volunteer.

"For the sponsor, it's a rewarding opportunity to give back to the military community," Hernandez said.

Sponsors can also log volunteer hours, strengthen their resumes through continued service, and become eligible for volunteer recognition and awards.
