Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) led the Senate Congressional Hispanic Caucus members Ben RayLuján(D-N.M), Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), and Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) in a statement condemning the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to allow the Department of Homeland Security to conduct immigration-related stops based solely on factors like race, language, and appearance.
"The conservative members of the Supreme Court have given the Trump administration a green light to stop anyone, including U.S. citizens, just because they have brown skin, are speaking another language, or are headed to a construction job. This will do immense harm to hardworking families and put a target on the back of millions of Americans, including our own families.
"In his concurring opinion, Justice Kavanaugh himself acknowledges that this will result in the brief detention of U.S. citizens and legal residents. But he doesn't seem to care.
"Is that truly what our country has come to? If you look like whatever the Supreme Court defines as an immigrant - will you have to carry your passport with you wherever you go?
"Law enforcement can target violent criminals without threatening our basic freedoms, and we urge the courts to return to common sense and stop this outrageous policy."
