BORDER BRIEF: President Trump’s Border Security Success Continues, Homeland Republicans Advance Funding for Years to Come

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Each month of President Trump's first 100 days in office has revealed a more secure border compared to the open-borders era of the Biden-Harris administration--and April was no exception. Today, the House Committee on Homeland Security released its newest "Border Brief " factsheet, detailing the April U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) data, which revealed a 93% drop in Southwest border apprehensions and an 88% drop in nationwide border encounters in April 2025 compared to April 2024. Also in April, the Committee advanced budget reconciliation recommendations to fund the Trump administration's border security efforts by providing resources to complete the border barrier system, enhance the advanced technology at our borders, and hire and retain CBP personnel.

Allowing Border Patrol agents and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers to carry out their missions and enforce the law continues to disincentivize illegal immigration. Border Patrol agents averaged just 279 apprehensions per day on the Southwest border in April, a 93% drop from the daily average in April 2024. In the first 100 days of the Trump administration, ICE arrested 66,463 illegal aliens in our communities.

After the Biden-Harris administration's complete disregard of law and order exacted an emotional and physical toll on Border Patrol agents, the Trump administration has worked to restore morale by untying their hands. With catch-and-release no longer in effect, and nationwide encounters at ports of entry down 83% compared to last April, CBP personnel are spending less time processing inadmissible aliens into the country, and more time securing our borders. But more must be done to undo the damage Biden and Harris created. That's why this Committee focused on advancing budget reconciliation recommendations that prioritize the morale and the mission of frontline personnel, including $4.1 billion for additional frontline CBP personnel and $2 billion for annual retention bonuses and signing incentives for the CBP workforce.

While the Trump administration has focused on removing criminal illegal aliens from the country and securing our borders from criminal cartels, congressional Democrats made a mockery of our national security last month by visiting a deported gang member in El Salvador who was rightfully removed from the country. To make matters worse, Democrats, including a Committee member, then chose to storm ICE's Delaney Hall detention facility in New Jersey. As Chairman Green put it, "This kind of publicity stunt is beneath the dignity of the offices these individuals hold." The contrast could not be clearer for the American people.
