NNSA releases 2025 Stockpile Stewardship and Management Plan

WASHINGTON - Today, the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) released the Stockpile Stewardship and Management Plan (SSMP) for Fiscal Year 2025. This report describes NNSA's continued plans to maintain a safe, secure, reliable, and effective nuclear weapons stockpile without the need for nuclear explosive testing. The SSMP further outlines NNSA's strategy to revitalize the scientific and engineering tools and infrastructure at the national laboratories, production facilities, and sites that underpin the nuclear security enterprise.

This year's SSMP details NNSA's efforts to establish the capability to produce a minimum of 80 plutonium pits per year; achieve the First Production Units of the W80-4 Life Extension Program (LEP), W87-1 Modification Program, and W93 warhead; maintain production of the B61-12 LEP and W88 Alteration 370 warheads; establish a program of record for the Sea-Launched Cruise Missile-Nuclear; and execute the B61-13 program.

"The SSMP is an annual document provided to Congress, the American people, and the global public. It is a testament to the United States' transparency into its nuclear deterrence programs, and outlines the status of major warhead modernization programs and highlights key budget information," said Jill Hruby, DOE Under Secretary for Nuclear Security and NNSA Administrator. "This year's report reaffirms the 2022 Nuclear Posture Review's commitment to investing in new initiatives focused on stockpile production, scientific and technological innovation, and better collaboration with our partners in order to maintain a safe, secure, and effective nuclear deterrent."

The nuclear deterrent is the cornerstone of the United States' security and has been a source of assurance for our allies and an essential contributor to global stability for more than 75 years. The credibility of the stockpile is demonstrated through our world-class science and engineering capabilities, and the SSMP describes in detail our plans to sustain these national assets. Although the global security landscape is more dynamic today than in recent years, our nuclear deterrent remains effective. This continuity in our posture is a testament to the agility of the nuclear enterprise and the headroom built into the U.S. strategy of deterrence.
