Nearly 300 employees enjoyed a "sunny summer getaway" at the annual Employee Barbecue in 'Ville Courts in May. This was the first year the event had a theme, according to Wendy Bowersox, organizational development manager in human resources, who leads the planning committee.
"We have not utilized a theme in the past, but as we received overwhelming endorsement from those in attendance this year, we will host the event with a theme next year," she says.
Mini golf was new this year to align with the summer activity vibe, as was the opportunity to get a fruit smoothie from the Kona Ice truck.
Also new to this year's event was the announcement of the recipient of the Skully's Circle award, which went to Dr. Sarah Brooks, associate professor and coordinator of professional development schools in the Department of Educational Foundations.
Brooks serves as the central coordinator for student teacher supervisors across K-12 placements, according to her nomination, " . . . and her work performance is exemplary in both scope and execution."
Other commendations from the nomination form include:
Hats off to the members of the Employee Barbecue planning committee: Bowersox; Dr. Victor DeSantis, vice president for university relations and strategic initiatives; Jennifer Hart, administrative office manager in the Office of the President; John Hearn, senior director of SMC operations; Pietra Jamison, former senior executive associate to the president; Daryl Matthews, director of university dining and catering; Jason Stetler, audio-visual manager; Patrick Wilson, director of housekeeping and university services; and Allison Yarrow, director of campus recreation.
"The event is planned over the course of several months by a small committee, but we have many partners' helping hands pulling it together," says Bowersox.
