As space and defense missions become increasingly data-intensive, distributed and software-defined, processing can no longer happen only after information reaches the ground. More of the mission, from analyzing sensor data to managing payloads and enabling autonomous operations, is moving onboard.
Frontgrade is expanding the processing capabilities available for those missions with the introduction of the SBC16A72-SVPX, a high-performance 3U SpaceVPX single-board computer designed to bring server-class mission computing into demanding space and defense environments.
Powered by the NXP Layerscape® LX2160 processor with sixteen Arm® Cortex®-A72 cores operating at up to 2.2 GHz and delivering up to 200,000 DMIPS of processing performance, the new platform combines high-performance computing with ECC-protected memory, high-speed Ethernet and PCIe connectivity, deterministic I/O and hardware-rooted security capabilities.
A key distinction is how the LX2160 handles high-speed network traffic. Its DPAA2 architecture and integrated Wire Rate I/O Processor support Ethernet connectivity up to 100 GbE and up to 114 Gbps of Layer 2 switching, with hardware designed to perform Layer 2 switching at wire rate. Fundamental packet movement and switching can be handled within the dedicated networking datapath rather than relying entirely on the general-purpose processor cores, leaving more computing resources available for mission applications and control-plane processing.
That combination is particularly valuable for communications-intensive applications where large volumes of data need to move and be processed onboard. Applications such as network gateway functions, payload data aggregation, edge analytics, software-defined networking and emerging 5G non-terrestrial network architectures can require both substantial processing performance and the ability to move data efficiently across the system.
The SBC16A72-SVPX is also designed to support mission management, payload processing, secure command and telemetry, distributed compute and software-defined avionics within a modular SpaceVPX architecture.
Modern mission systems increasingly need to turn data into decisions closer to the point of sensing. Bringing scalable compute and high-throughput networking together in a compact platform gives system architects another building block for distributing intelligence across the spacecraft and reducing dependence on centralized or ground-based processing.
That approach reflects Frontgrade's broader mission-processing strategy: helping customers build modular architectures that can reduce integration complexity, accommodate changing mission requirements and accelerate the path from technology to deployed capability.
With the SBC16A72-SVPX, system designers can move more data, dedicate more computing resources to the mission and bring greater intelligence onboard. The result is a more capable processing foundation for increasingly connected, autonomous and data-intensive space and defense platforms.
