TOMORROW: Baldwin Will Force a Vote on Her War Powers Resolution to End Trump’s Illegal War in Iran

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Tomorrow, U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) will force the Senate to vote on her War Powers Resolution to end the war in Iran. The vote comes just one day before the fragile and crumbling ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran expires. Tensions are rising in the Strait of Hormuz after the U.S boarded and seized an Iranian ship in recent days. Iran has closed off traffic in the Strait, while U.S. troops remain in harm's way blocking Iranian ports.

"The ceasefire, which is being broken left and right, expires in less than two days, and Congress now must do its job to end this illegal war of choice before the President ramps it up again," said Senator Baldwin. "This war has simply been a disaster, and there is absolutely no reason we should go full steam ahead back into it. 13 servicemembers are dead and hundreds more are injured, gas and fertilizer prices are through the roof, and we have already spent an untold amount of taxpayer money - but it certainly is in the tens of billions of dollars. We have always known diplomacy is the only way out of this mess - and that is where every ounce of attention of this administration should be, not threatening to commit war crimes. Tomorrow, I am forcing the Senate to vote on my resolution to end this war - the only question will be whether my Republican colleagues want to own the consequences of it raging on, or they will step up for the American people and put an end to this life-taking, cost-raising chaos."

After the war began, Senators Baldwin, Cory Booker (D-NJ), Tim Kaine (D-VA), Chris Murphy (D-CT), Adam Schiff (D-CA), and Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) all introduced separate War Powers Resolutions, which, if passed, would halt the war in Iran and require the Administration receive congressional approval to resume it. The resolutions are privileged, meaning they can be brought to the Senate floor for a vote by any Senator after ten calendar days of filing. The group of Senators has pledged to keep debating and voting on the War Powers Resolutions until there are public hearings.
