Representatives from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Seattle District are hosting an open house Sept. 1 in Auburn, Washington to inform the public about the district's efforts to update Mud Mountain Dam's Water Control Manual.

In addition to the Water Control Manual update, the public can learn about Mud Mountain Dam, USACE Emergency Management and USACE Dam Safety Programs. The cities of Pacific, Auburn and King and Pierce Counties will also share information related to flood risk management. Attendees will also have an opportunity to learn about the associated environmental review process and how to provide comments for the draft supplemental environmental assessment.

Located in King and Pierce counties on the White River, Mud Mountain Dam provides flood risk protection for the lower Puyallup River valley; it has prevented an estimated $4 billion in flood damages since its completion in 1948 and helped reduce December 2025 flood damages by an estimated $215 million in a preliminary analysis.

USACE experts will be available to discuss and answer questions about several topics, including how:

• Mud Mountain Dam stores and releases water during floods
• USACE ensures its dams operate safely
• USACE works with local flood and diking districts to repair damaged levees
• The public can submit comments and feedback for the draft environmental assessment
