In support of continued efforts to improve the lives of women and children with disabilities in the occupied West Bank, Spain has contributed nearly €1 million to support UNRWA's protection, rehabilitation and healthcare services.
This funding will expand access to essential services, reaching women and children with disabilities living in areas affected by violence, displacement and movement restrictions; it will reinforce community-based protection systems, and support vulnerable individuals.
With Spain's support, UNRWA will deliver tailored assistance to enable them to access timely and appropriate protection support, including cash assistance, essential medical and rehabilitation services and assistive devices.
"During the current crisis in the occupied West Bank, women and children with disabilities face increasingly restricted access to health and rehabilitation services, placing them at higher risk, including of gender-based violence," says Roland Friedrich, UNRWA's Director of UNRWA Affairs in the occupied West Bank. "Spain's generous contribution will allow UNRWA to reach the individuals most at risk with specialised services, helping women and children access care in dignity when they need it most".
The funding will also help to improve community-based responses. Local community organisations will receive training on safeguarding, inclusive emergency response, and risk-mapping. Technical support will be provided to community-based rehabilitation centres, and mobile service units will be deployed to provide rehabilitation and mental health and psychosocial support to individuals unable to reach fixed facilities, particularly in areas where movement restrictions or infrastructure damage impede access.
"Spain remains committed to supporting women and children with disabilities through concrete assistance that improves access to protection, rehabilitation and essential services," says Pablo Bustinduy, Spain's Minister of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs, and the 2030 Agenda. "This contribution reflects our continued partnership with UNRWA and commitment to supporting Palestine Refugee women and children with disabilities."
Spain has been a longstanding partner of UNRWA in serving Palestine Refugees. Spain's support is crucial to help vulnerable populations continue to access life-saving protection services, essential rehabilitation, and inclusive community-based assistance during a period of significant humanitarian need across the occupied West Bank.
UNRWAis the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East. The United Nations General Assembly established UNRWA in 1949 with a mandate to provide humanitarian assistance and protection to registered Palestine Refugees in the Agency's area of operations pending a just and lasting solution to their plight.
UNRWAoperates in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, the Gaza Strip, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.
Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians lost their homes and livelihoods due to the 1948 War. Amid a failure to find a just and lasting solution to the plight of that generation of Palestine Refugees and subsequent ones, millions continue to be displaced and in need of support, over 75 years on.
UNRWAhelps Palestine Refugees achieve their full potential in human development. It does this through quality services it provides in education, health care, relief and social services, protection, camp infrastructure and improvement, microfinance, and emergency assistance. UNRWA is funded almost entirely by voluntary contributions.
