At an event held at PSEG's Salem and Hope Creek Nuclear Generating Station on April 8, 2026, PSEG applauded Gov. Mikie Sherrill's decisive action to accelerate new nuclear development in the state.
Since taking office, Gov. Sherrill continues to take action to show that New Jersey is open for business. By removing outdated barriers and creating a clear path for modern nuclear technologies, the governor is ensuring that New Jersey can meet growing energy needs with reliable, 24/7, carbon-free power that supports economic growth for decades to come.
PSEG shares the governor's recognition of the benefits and opportunities that new nuclear generation can bring to New Jersey. The governor's vision creates space for innovation and opens the door to new investment that will benefit communities across the state. New Jersey currently imports nearly half of its electricity, leaving our residents and businesses increasingly exposed to regional supply constraints, volatile costs, and the impacts of a rapidly changing grid. With energy demand rising and supply tightening, expanding instate nuclear generation is essential to maintaining reliability, predictability and our long-term energy independence.
Under the governor's leadership, New Jersey has a unique opportunity to become a hub for nuclear innovation. The state already benefits from a highly skilled nuclear workforce of more than 1,600 professionals, with several thousand additional jobs supported indirectly. Coupled with New Jersey's strong education system and deep pipeline of technical and skilled-trades talent, these assets position our state to lead the next era of energy.
PSEG continues to state that it is willing to enable new nuclear at our existing nuclear location by working with partners to leverage our Early Site Permit and our extensive expertise in permitting and nuclear operations, without investing PSEG's own capital to finance the project.
This is an exciting time for the future of nuclear power in New Jersey. Working across public and private organizations, together with our labor partners, New Jersey can demonstrate what the future of nuclear energy looks like-and ensure that future is built right here at home.
