Gilbert's Redevelopment team is leading a new public art project for the Heritage District and is seeking multiple artists or artist teams. The project includes designing and fabricating "critter" art installations for a desert-themed installation dubbed the Critter Crawl.
The Critter Crawl is a new interactive, scavenger hunt-style placemaking initiative designed to create a playful and engaging public art experience that encourages exploration throughout the Heritage District. The goal is to strengthen connectivity throughout the district and create a narrative about Arizona's desert denizens. The 'critters' will serve as charming, serendipitous encounters for residents and visitors, creating moments of delight and curiosity throughout downtown Gilbert's pedestrian-friendly environment.
Artists are encouraged to present bold, imaginative, and highly creative concepts that reflect their unique artistic voice and personal interpretations of Arizona wildlife. The Critter Crawl project invites original work that celebrates local wildlife in expressive, unexpected, or whimsical ways.
Public art on display in the Heritage District is referred to as the Community Canvas. This includes local installations on electrical boxes, one-of-a-kind fiberglass benches, murals at individual businesses, and seasonal public art installations. In addition, the Alley Gallery celebrates local art displayed on select doors throughout the district. All the public art displays in the Heritage District are featured on the Gilbert Art Map: www.gilbertaz.gov/ArtMap.
Artists are invited to submit their work by 5 PM on May 7. To review the complete Call For Artists, visit gilbertaz.gov.
