On April 28th, 2026 at 1716 hours in downtown Los Angeles, a man threatening to jump off of an overpass to the 101 freeway below is now safe after being taken into custody. He was medically evaluated by LAFD paramedics and transported to a local area hospital.
LAFD, LAPD, LAPD SWAT and CHP responded.
The LAFD supported the Los Angeles Police Department with their rescue of an approximately 30 year old male. LAFD deployed rescue air cushions to both sides of the overpass and CHP closed all lanes of the 101 freeway in both directions during the duration of the incident.
LAPD officers and LAPD SWAT members utilized multiple tactics to safely remove the man from danger. They used pry bars to restrict the movement of man to an area above the LAFD Rescue Air Cushions. They also attempted negotiations with the man and even attempted to lure the man out of his position by offering food.
Ultimately the Los Angeles Police Department cut a hole in the guard fence and with officers securely in harnesses, removed the man from harm.
The patient cooperated with authorities and was placed in a harness to be safely removed from danger.
LAFD Captain PIO Branden Silverman on scene for public and media questions. Additionally, Captain Silverman provided the media.
