Westbound travel on Highway 1 in Sumas area now open

ABBOTSFORD - Drivers traveling westbound through the Abbotsford area can now remain on Highway 1, avoiding a detour via Highway 7.

With flood waters receding, crews have been able to reopen the two westbound lanes of that stretch of Highway 1, which had been closed between Highway 11 and No. 3 Road.

While water covering the eastbound lanes is slowly receding, those lanes remain closed, requiring drivers travelling east to continue to detour via Highway 7. People are asked to continue to avoid travel in this area unless necessary.

Ministry of Transportation and Transit staff are monitoring water levels and will open eastbound lanes as soon as it is safe to do so.

The highway infrastructure remains vulnerable following recent severe storms. With more rain in the forecast, people should be aware that highways, including the westbound lanes on Highway 1, could close at any time if conditions change.
