RSU Female STEM Students Invited to Connect at ‘Witching Hour’ Event Oct. 31

[Link]Female students studying STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) at Rogers State University are invited to connect with other female students across the course disciplines next week at a fun Halloween day event.

Called "The Witching Hour," this fun and educational event will kick off at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, inside Herrington Hall on RSU's Claremore campus.

According to RSU STEM Coordinator Laci Henegar, given that STEM is a male-dominated field, there are fewer opportunities for female students in the various fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to develop friendships with other female students interested in STEM, and because of this, the idea came about for "The Witching Hour."

"We have several courses of study here at RSU that fall under the 'STEM' umbrella - nursing, psychology, sociology, chemical engineering, cybersecurity, biology, math and physical science - but these pursuits are kind of separate from one another, which makes it more challenging for our female students to befriend and relate to other female students, especially in that many of the courses are online," she said. "We wanted to create an opportunity for these students to get together and learn more about RSU's other areas of STEM while socializing and forming new friendships."

Representatives from the respective departments will be on hand to share interactive demonstrations with attendees throughout Herrington Hall at various stations.

"From 2:30 to 3:30, this event will be open to RSU students only, but starting at 3:30, it will be open to everyone, RSU student or not," Henegar said. "Herrington will be decorated for the occasion, and many of those helping with the event will be in costume, so it will be a lot of fun for everyone, while also helping to connect our female STEM students with one another."

Tulsa Regional STEM Alliance, and several RSU alumna working in STEM fields also will be participating in this event.

Attendance is free, and open to all ages, but children must have adult supervision.

"The Witching Hour" hands-on activities will continue until 5 p.m.
