What Is Going On With Exxon Mobil Stock

Exxon Mobil (XOM) stock returned 50.1% over the past twelve months, compared with 9.8% for the S&P 500. Yet it still trades at 16.9 times earnings, against 21.8 for the median S&P 500 company. That could be a sound business on sale. Alternatively, the price appears to assume that Exxon's refineries and oil fields cannot maintain their recent pace, and that its cash will stop covering its buybacks. How solid is the business behind that multiple?

Exxon Mobil Earns More Cash Than It Hands Back

So far, the cash holds up, and it comes from a very large business. Management said on its October 30, 2026 call that Exxon is the largest nonstate-owned refiner in the world, running about 3.6 million barrels of crude a day through its refineries. The Energy Products segment brought in $290 billion of revenue in fiscal 2025.

Exxon produced $43.0 billion of free cash flow over the four quarters to September 30, 2026, more than the $37.8 billion it paid in dividends and buybacks. Management plans to keep buybacks at $20 billion in 2027, and it raised the dividend 4% on the same call. The balance sheet leaves room too: total debt equals 5.0% of Exxon's market value, against 19.4% for the S&P 500.

Most Of Exxon Mobil's Profit Came In Two Quarters

Of the $40.6 billion Exxon earned over the latest twelve months, $29.9 billion came in the June and September 2026 quarters. Operating margin reached 17.0% in fiscal Q3 2026, compared with 6.4% two quarters earlier. Management said that conflict in the Middle East constrained supplies of crude, diesel and gasoline during the third quarter, and that the lack of supply led to short markets and higher prices.

Management's own guess is that markets will not get back closer to normal until well through 2027, and possibly later. The price appears to assume that some of this profit fades.

The longer stretch is flatter. Revenue grew 19.5% over the latest twelve months. The two earlier twelve-month periods were declines, of 1.8% and 4.4%, so growth across all three periods averaged only 4.4%.

How Is Exxon Mobil Trying To Earn More?

Management is cutting costs and making its refineries yield more diesel. Exxon has made $16.9 billion of structural cost savings since 2019, and management aims for $20 billion of cumulative savings by 2030. Management put the gain from higher diesel yields at $3.5 billion of margin so far in 2026, and Uaru, Exxon's fifth development in Guyana, is expected to start up in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Those plans matter because you cannot tell from the multiple which quarter is Exxon's normal one. Free cash flow was $18.5 billion in fiscal Q3 2026, against $2.24 billion in fiscal Q1 2026. Management's 2027 buyback plan assumes reasonable market conditions, and management said that when times are tougher, Exxon uses the balance sheet to supplement its payouts.

What Are You Betting On With Exxon Mobil?

Exxon's cash covers its dividend and buybacks today, but the company has not yet shown that its refineries and oil fields can earn at the pace of the last two quarters once fuel supplies recover. Buying at this price is therefore less a bet that the market has mispriced a steady business than a bet that Exxon keeps its profit near that pace through its savings and new production.

Management plans to reaffirm its key 2027 planning metrics in a press release before the end of 2026. When the company reports in January 2027, Exxon's quarterly operating margin is the figure to watch.
