WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Brendan F. Boyle (PA-02) released the following statement after Donald Trump issued pardons and commutations for individuals convicted for their roles in the violent January 6, 2021 insurrection:
"What a disgrace to our country and Constitution that Donald Trump pardoned the criminals who violently attacked police officers, ransacked the Capitol, and tried to overturn a free and fair election. These thugs didn't just break the law-they attacked the very foundation of our democracy. By pardoning them, Trump has made it abundantly clear that he stands with the violent criminals and not for the rule of law.
This decision also highlights the blatant hypocrisy of Trump and his Republican allies. They continue to stand with the violent mob that assaulted law enforcement, instead of with the brave officers who defended our Capitol. Their supposed support for police officers and the rule of law vanishes when it's politically inconvenient.
The attack on January 6 was one of the darkest days in our nation's history. Pardoning the criminals who carried out this assault on America sends a chilling message that such violence will go unpunished. This shameful betrayal will not be forgotten-by history or by the American people."
