Van Buren County Sheriff News Release -Welfare Check and Assault on Deputies

Nature of Incident:

Welfare check led to assault on deputies and paramedic

Suspect:

41-year-old male from Bloomingdale

Narrative:

Sheriff Daniel E. Abbott reports that on the above date and time, deputies responded to the 03000 block of 37 1/2 St in Bloomingdale Township to check the welfare of an individual at the residence. A family member called with concerns for the resident's well-being. Deputies were able to make entry into the residence with the assistance of the family member. After announcing their presence several times, a male ran out from one of the bedrooms near where two deputies were standing. The male ran toward both deputies, striking both deputies with a metal object before falling to the ground. A Taser was deployed by a deputy and after a short fight with the individual, he was able to be handcuffed.

The two deputies received medical treatment for injuries sustained from the incident. The 41-year-old suspect was lodged at the Van Buren County Jail on charges of assault with intent to maim, two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, two counts of resisting/obstructing police causing injury, and one count of assaulting/resisting/obstructing a paramedic. The investigation is ongoing.
