SGMC Health Welcomes Students to 2026 Volunteen Summer Program

Participants in the 2026 SGMC Health Volunteen Program

SGMC Health has welcomed 71 high school students to its 2026 Volunteen Summer Program, continuing its commitment to fostering student engagement and community service while introducing participants to careers in healthcare.

The annual program provides students with structured, hands-on experience across multiple areas of the health system, including clinical units, imaging services, and administrative departments. Throughout the summer, participants assist staff, observe daily operations, and interact with patients and visitors, gaining insight into the delivery of care in a hospital setting. In addition to these learning experiences, the contributions of Volunteens provide meaningful support to hospital operations.

This impact is reflected in the program's growing reach. In 2025, Volunteens contributed a total of 3,025 service hours, supporting staff and enhancing the experience for patients and visitors.

"The Volunteen Program offers students a meaningful opportunity to engage in healthcare while developing skills that will benefit them for years to come," said Colby Ruiz, MD, Physician Advisor for Student Engagement Programs. "It's inspiring to see the compassion they show our patients and visitors each day. Their willingness to learn and serve truly makes a difference across our organization."

Through their involvement, students strengthen communication and teamwork skills while exploring potential career paths. Many participants complete the program with a greater understanding of healthcare systems and an increased interest in pursuing medical or service-oriented professions.

The Volunteen Summer Program reflects SGMC Health's ongoing investment in youth development and its dedication to cultivating the next generation of healthcare professionals.
