WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senators Tim Kaine (D-VA) and Rick Scott (R-FL) introduced a bipartisan resolution calling for free and fair elections in Venezuela.
"Maduro may be gone but his regime remains fully in place in Venezuela, and his successors are rapidly tightening their grip on the country. The U.S. must use all of its diplomatic tools to push for free and fair elections as soon as possible in Venezuela," said Kaine, Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere. "This bipartisan resolution reaffirms the urgency of elections and the need for the Venezuelan people to decide their own future rather than a corrupt regime."
"Thanks to President Trump and Secretary Rubio's leadership, there is real hope for Venezuela as Nicolás Maduro faces justice in the United States," said Scott, who serves on the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere. "The next step must be to ensure that the Venezuelan people can choose their future through free and fair elections. We must also use all diplomatic tools available to secure the immediate and unconditional release of every single political prisoner, so Venezuelans can finally attain the freedom they have fought and dreamed of for far too long."
