In Washington, success often rests on preparation, persistence, and having the right people willing to step up and lead. For America's automobile transporters, few lawmakers have demonstrated those qualities better than Rep. Jimmy Patronis.

As the lead sponsor of the CARS Act, Rep. Patronis recognized a growing challenge facing the industry and took decisive action to advance a practical solution. His legislation would improve efficiency, reduce costs for consumers, and preserve the industry's unwavering commitment to safety.

The need for this legislation is straightforward. Modern vehicles weigh significantly more than a generation ago. Larger vehicle designs and the growing adoption of electric and hybrid vehicles have contributed to heavier loads. Yet the rules governing automobile transporters have remained unchanged, forcing carriers to leave empty spaces on trailers. The CARS Act addresses that mismatch by allowing a minor 10% increase in maximum weight.

Safety is Preserved

This legislation is carefully tailored and grounded in safety. The increased weight tolerance would apply to only about 14,000 stinger-steered automobile transporters, many of which are already equipped with tires, axles, and other components that are fully capable of accommodating larger loads.

Under the CARS Act, automobile transporters would still be required to comply with federal bridge formula requirements designed to protect infrastructure. Additionally, they would continue operating primarily on interstate highways and major freight corridors rather than local roads. After the first delivery, typically just a short distance from the point of origin, the transporter's weight would likely fall below the current 80,000-pound threshold.

Consumers Benefit

The CARS Act is also a consumer-focused measure.

When carriers are forced to leave vehicles behind because of outdated weight restrictions, additional trips are required to move the same number of automobiles. More trips mean more fuel consumption, higher transportation costs, increased emissions, and greater strain on supply chains. By allowing carriers to make better use of equipment that is already on the road, the legislation would save fuel and improve productivity.

Those savings matter because transportation costs ultimately become part of the price consumers pay for vehicles. At a time when Americans remain focused on affordability, with many households operating on limited budgets, eliminating unnecessary expenses is a goal everyone should be able to get behind.

Leadership Makes the Difference

In the partisan climate of Capitol Hill, even commonsense bills, like the CARS Act, face an uphill climb. Achieving progress requires a leader willing to engage, answer difficult questions, and fight relentlessly. Fortunately for our nation's auto haulers, we have such a champion in our corner.

From the outset, Rep. Patronis has proven that he is serious about turning the CARS Act into law. The first big test came earlier this year when the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee considered the highway bill.

We all knew the challenge ahead. The markup was tense. The issue was contested. And by our count, we were short on votes. In preparation, ATA and Rep. Patronis' team put together a plan to win the policy debate and build support. What followed was a masterclass in advocacy.

Rep. Patronis marshaled strong, fact-based arguments; addressed his colleagues' concerns; and never stopped until we ultimately prevailed. His persistence and determination turned an expected loss into a resounding victory. By one vote, the CARS Act passed as an amendment to the highway bill, which is now pending before the House of Representatives.

The CARS Act would enhance efficiency without compromising safety, support affordability, and strengthen the automotive supply chain. Just as important, it serves as a reminder that thoughtful policymaking and determined leadership can still deliver meaningful results, even when the odds may be stacked against you.

Rep. Jimmy Patronis has been a true friend to the men and women who move America's vehicles safely every day. The automobile hauling industry is grateful for his tenacity and leadership.
