Mesquite Rallies to Assist Neighbors Impacted by Federal Shutdown

The ongoing federal government shutdown has far-reaching and lingering impacts for many Mesquite residents. Those who rely on assistance from federal programs, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (or SNAP-formerly food stamps), and Women, Infants and Children (WIC) are feeling the effects of the suspension of benefits, which is stretching into its second month. Thankfully, City of Mesquite residents in need can turn to local nonprofits, such as Sharing Life Community Outreach, for services to help them navigate this difficult time.

While local nonprofit assistance does not offer long-term solutions to replace federal programs, Sharing Life and others like it, are poised to assist qualifying residents during the interim, until federal payments return.

The City of Mesquite partners with the Sharing Life nonprofit, to provide help with paying water bills to avoid service disruptions for those experiencing hardships.

"If you happen to be in a position where you can, please consider donating food or money to Sharing Life, to help them make a difference in the lives of our neighbors," said Mesquite Mayor Dan Alemán Jr. "Executive Director Teresa Jackson and her team can make a dollar go a long way, and with the holidays coming up, they will need the extra support."
