Treasurer Russell Condemns Supreme Court Decision on Transgender Health Care, Urges States to Join CT's Safe Harbor Fund

Hartford, CT - Connecticut State Treasurer Erick Russell released the following statement today regarding the Supreme Court's decision upholding Tennessee's ban on gender-affirming care for minors.

Treasurer Russell: "The Supreme Court's decision to uphold Tennessee's ban on gender-affirming care for minors is profoundly disappointing and deeply harmful to the LGBTQ+ community, especially to the health and wellbeing of trans children.

"I share the sadness expressed by Justice Sotomayor in her dissent. This ruling ignores the substantial medical consensus supporting gender-affirming care and subjects the health of transgender youth to the volatility of politics. This decision will surely embolden those who would discriminate and exacerbate the mental health crisis faced by transgender youth. It is even more troubling less than a day after the Trump administration pulled access to LGBTQ+-specific mental health specialists from the national 988 suicide prevention hotline further isolating a community already facing significant challenges. In February alone, the hotline's LGBTQ+-specific service averaged 2,400 calls a day, and according to the CDC, LGBTQ+ youth are more than four times likely to attempt suicide than their peers.

"In contrast, Connecticut law remains steadfast in its commitment to protect and support the LGBTQ+ community. We will continue to welcome those denied care in other states and ensure they have access to the treatments they need to live healthy, authentic lives.

"That's why the Connecticut Safe Harbor Fund, which passed the legislature earlier this month, is so important-it provides a lifeline to those harmed by exclusionary policies and reaffirms our dedication to safeguarding the rights and dignity of all Americans. In the wake of this decision and less than a week before the three-year anniversary of Dobbs, there is an urgent need for other states to follow Connecticut's lead."
