Residential garbage rates changed on July 1

Most residential customers will see an increase on their monthly garbage bill between $1.55 and $2.05. The increase is primarily due to increased costs of providing garbage, recycling, and compost service due to inflation, increased cost of labor, and higher regionwide garbage and compost disposal fees.

Your monthly waste collection charge is based on the size of your garbage container. Call your garbage companyto change the size of your container.

20-gallon 35-gallon 60-gallon 90-gallon
Monthly cost $38.40 $43.80 $48.85 $55.70
Weight limit 60 pounds 85 pounds 135 pounds 175 pounds

Mattress recycling and donation

Recycle your old mattress - for free!

A new Oregon law allows mattresses and box springs to be recycled for free at participating drop-off locations.

Did you know that up to 75% of a mattress can be recycled into new, useful products? Metal and steel are recycled into rebar and other construction materials. Cotton is repurposed as home insulation. And wood frames are turned into mulch or used as fuel for energy.

Find a drop-off site near you

Even better: Donate it!

If your mattress is clean, dry, and in good shape, consider donating it.

Community Warehouse, a Portland nonprofit, accepts gently used mattresses to provide to community members overcoming adversity. In just one year, they redistributed over 3,000 mattresses-and countless better nights of sleep.

Mattresses must be in usable condition and free of stains, rips, odors, and pet hair. Community Warehouse has three drop-off locations and offers pickup for a small fee.

Guide to what goes in your bins

This full-page postershows what items are allowed in your recycling, compost, and garbagebins.

Post the guide where it's easy to see. Many Portlanders put this guide on their fridge, inside a kitchen cupboard door, or in their garage, so it's easy to double-check.

Not sure how to get rid of something? For items that can't go in any of your bins, like chemicals, TVs, computers, and CFL light bulbs, call Metro at 503-234-3000 or submit a question online. Metro staff will let you know your options for safe disposal or recycling.
