Approximately 1,000 BU students, some 650 members of the local Hindu community and others, gathered on the BU Beach on Saturday, March 21, to participate in the Hindu Cultural Association's annual Holi Festival. Holi celebrates the end of winter and arrival of spring and the triumph of good over evil. During the festival, participants throw colored powder called gulal and colored water at one another. This year's BU event was accompanied by music, shouts of "Holi hai!" ["It's Holi!"], and much laughter and enthusiasm.
The Hindu Cultural Association says that to mark the occasion, revelers dispersed a whopping 1,700 pounds of powder on one another. And fittingly, the event coincided with the first full day of spring. The photos below capture the exuberance of the festivities.
