APPLE GROVE, W.Va. - Today, U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) received the first ever "Woman of Steel" award from Nucor Steel and toured their facility in Apple Grove, W.Va.
"It is a tremendous honor to receive Nucor's first-ever 'Woman of Steel' award, and play a role in making this investment into our state possible" Senator Capito said. "Throughout my time in Congress, I have worked to support West Virginia's manufacturers and strengthen our domestic steel industry to help ensure that our state remains a place where businesses can grow. Seeing firsthand the dedication of Nucor's employees here in Mason County, I am proud of the strength of West Virginia's workforce and the impact Nucor is already making across the Mountain State."
"From the day we announced plans to build Nucor Steel West Virginia in Mason County, Senator Capito has been a champion for this project and our team," Leon Topalian, Chair and CEO of Nucor Corporation said. "She understands the importance of American manufacturing and what investments like this mean for workers, families and communities across West Virginia. More importantly, she has backed that support with action, stepping up to help us at critical moments and always asking what she could do to help move this project forward. The Woman of Steel Award is reserved for those who go above and beyond in their support of American manufacturing and the Nucor family, and Senator Capito truly embodies what this award represents. We are proud to recognize her leadership, her friendship and her unwavering commitment to the people of West Virginia."
"We are proud to be safely delivering one of the largest industrial construction projects in the country on schedule and on budget," Johnny Jacobs, Vice President and General Manager of Nucor Steel West Virginia said. "From the beginning, the people of Mason County and West Virginia welcomed Nucor with open arms. Senator Capito understood early on what this investment could mean not just for Nucor, but for Mason County, West Virginia, American manufacturing, and American workers. Her support and partnership have meant a great deal to our team, and we are honored to present her with the Nucor Woman of Steel Award here today."
DETAILS ON AWARD FROM NUCOR:
The Woman of Steel Award is the most prestigious honor Nucor presents to someone outside the company. In the early 2000s, Nucor's former CEO Dan DiMicco initiated the award, which is not given out regularly, in order to celebrate exceptional partners who have gone above and beyond to support American manufacturing and the Nucor Family. Senator Capito's steadfast commitment to American manufacturing and the steel industry makes her a truly deserving recipient of this award.
