We are facing challenges such as the crisis in Gaza, the Palestinian issue and the war in Ukraine. International order is unable to function properly. Donald Trump is perfectly right in that if we continue as we have done to date, nothing will change. If we want to reinforce the peaceful co-existence of people and nations, we must do something new, the Prime Minister stressed.
Mr Orbán drew attention to the fact that this was a new initiative which had a chance for success, and also the underlying intention was good. "The goal of peace is the most important, and the individuals involved are consequential. Therefore, we have a chance to do something good and effective, I sincerely hope," he added.
Regarding President Trump, Mr Orbán said he has always been a man of peace. "I have always been convinced that regardless of any dispute or confrontations the Europeans may have with the Americans, we must support President Trump's peace efforts. Therefore, I believe that what we're doing in Brussels - supporting Ukraine in the continuation of the war - is a mistake."
Europe is the main obstacle to peace, he stated. "If the Europeans stopped supporting the concept of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the Ukrainians about the continuation of the war and the winning of the war on the battlefield, then we would already have peace," Mr Orbán pointed out.
He said the problem is that there are rival concepts. On the one side, there is President Trump along with a few countries like Hungary, standing for peace, he said. The other concept is the strategy of the Brusselites who say that they want to win the war against Russia. No one knows the answer to how anyone or any alliance, however wide, could win a war against a super power with nuclear armaments. "The continuation of the war is the worst strategy I can possibly imagine. Regrettably, this is precisely what we're doing in Brussels," he added.
Mr Orbán said in the present changing world, personal relationships, gathering friends and concluding agreements will play the main role. He added that it was not an aesthetic or philosophical question what you preferred: a world order based on rules or one based on agreements, deals. The fact is that the rule-based order has failed. It is unable to solve complex challenges, especially in the western half of the world. There is no reason why we should continue this, we must do something different. And there is only one rival concept, namely a new order based on deals which President Trump has created, he added.
"We must find our place in this new environment. This means negotiations, national interests, agreements and relations. Don't trust the rules. Don't trust a single institution. You should only trust your own abilities to conclude good deals with others," Mr Orbán added.
