Switching from Hoopla

Your Eugene Public Library card gives you free access to an enormous collection of online choices to enjoy on your eReader, tablet, computer, phone or TV, including eBooks, audiobooks, comics, magazines, movies and more.

Our subscription to one of these services, Hoopla, will expire at the end of May 2025.

Moving forward, library cardholders will be able to enjoy online items with our continuing services:

  • Libby - ebooks and audiobooks
  • Flipster - magazines
  • ComicsPlus - comics and graphic novels
  • Kanopy - movies, documentaries and educational courses

Why is the library making this change?

The services, items and events our library offers are always evolving to meet new conditions, including our community's changing needs and interests. We regularly analyze and evaluate all services to weigh their costs and benefits to our community.

Why end the Hoopla subscription in particular?

In recent years, Hoopla's price has increased dramatically, to the point that it's become unsustainable for the library to continue the service. Currently, an average title costs $2.29 from Hoopla, compared to 67 cents from our Libby service for ebooks and audiobooks.

At the same time, the quality of Hoopla's collection has declined due to the addition of thousands of self-published items, items with misleading titles, and some books entirely generated by AI.

Also, Libby is more popular with our cardholders, provides better quality, and is less expensive. No longer paying for Hoopla will allow us to move some funds to enhance our Libby collection and reduce wait times for popular items. Another advantage of Libby is the ability to suggest titles you'd like us to add.

But I prefer Hoopla!

We're sorry to discontinue a service you've enjoyed and appreciated. We truly wish we could always offer everything! But unfortunately, that's not realistic or sustainable.

When is the last day I can use Hoopla?

The library will stop paying our subscription to Hoopla at the end of May. Based on our past experiences with online services, we're not sure how quickly or slowly Hoopla will actually turn off our service.
