Press Release
Resynchronization of Unit 2 of the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant with the National Power Grid
Bucharest, May 30, 2026
Nuclearelectrica SA announces that Unit 2 of the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant was resynchronized with the National Power Grid on the evening of May 30, 2026.
Unit 2 of Cernavoda NPP automatically disconnected from the grid on the evening of May 4 due to a malfunction in an insulator associated with the power output transformer, which required replacing the Cernavoda NPP Unit 2 transformer with a spare unit and, consequently, a longer outage period, given that the work to replace the electrical transformer is a complex operation that involves isolating, dismantling, and relocating the original transformer, as well as complex testing and calibration of the new transformer, in strict compliance with nuclear industry standards.
During the repair work and replacement of the transformer with the spare unit, the Unit 2 reactor was kept safely shut down, with no impact on nuclear safety, personnel, the public, or the environment, in strict compliance with applicable procedures.
