March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, which raises awareness about the inclusion of people with developmental disabilities and the barriers they face. State Treasurer Roby Smith is sharing how IAble can help people with disabilities overcome one of those barriers - saving money.
"Having the tools to save money helps us build a foundation for independence, financial security and future opportunities," said Treasurer Smith. "With IAble, people with disabilities can pursue those opportunities without worrying about their eligibility for crucial assistance programs they rely on."
Money in an IAble account is protected from asset caps tied to means-tested public benefits. IAble offers a checking account option and a range of investment options to meet the account owner's goals and timeline. Funds can be used tax-free for qualified disability expenses, such as housing, education, transportation, employment training and more.
Unlike traditional savings accounts, IAble accounts are designed specifically for people with disabilities, and they don't have to navigate these accounts alone. Family, friends and other members of their support system can make contributions to help them achieve their savings goals.
