To Our Stevenson Community,
It is with great sadness that I must share the news of the passing of Malcolm Berman on Sunday, September 7. He was 89. I know that the Stevenson community joins me in expressing our deepest sympathy to his devoted spouse Sandy, a great friend of our university and a long-serving member of our Board of Trustees. Together, Malcolm and Sandy shared more than 68 years of marriage, three sons, and a large and extended family of grandchildren and great grandchildren. In Malcolm's honor, we are flying our Stevenson flags at half-mast today across the campus.
Malcolm had an extraordinary life and built, from humble beginnings, a successful business empire that included publishing, hotels and resorts, banking and real estate, and nursing homes. He was a pioneer and innovator and is credited with bringing the concept of the timeshare to the United States real estate market. Moreso, he was a deeply devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who treasured time with his family and following the lives and accomplishments of his many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
The generosity and philanthropy that he and Sandy have shown is known far and wide in our Maryland community. Together, Malcolm and Sandy have made a lasting impact on our region's healthcare and educational institutions. Their generosity has established the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Cancer Institute at GBMC; the Sandra R. Berman Heart Institute at UM St. Joseph; LifeBridge's Sandra and Malcolm Berman Brain and Spine Institute; and the Sandra R. Berman Center for Humanity, Tolerance, and Holocaust Education at Towson University, among others.
Here at Stevenson, Malcolm and Sandy's generosity has been nothing short of transformative for our campus. Their gifts have included the naming gift for our Sandra R. Berman School of Nursing and Health Professions; funds to support new educational technology and equipment for our Nursing Resource Center; scholarships for Stevenson nursing students; and the naming gift for the new Sandra and Malcolm Berman Family Performing Arts Center, now under construction and slated to open in 2026 on our North Campus.
While we honor the life and accomplishments of Malcolm Berman, let us also extend our thoughts and prayers to Sandy and their family at this time. May his memory be an ongoing blessing to his many family members and friends. You can read more about Malcolm's life at this link.
Sincerely,
Elliot Hirshman
President
