Coinciding with the fourth anniversary of the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Minister for Defence, Margarita Robles, held a videoconference meeting with officials from the Ukrainian Border Guard.

This meeting, part of the regular contact with authorities involved in Ukrainian defence, served as an opportunity for the minister to reiterate her support "for as long as necessary". Robles believes that the European Union cannot "lower its guard" and must continue to press for a "just and lasting peace".

In this regard, she stressed that any solution must be led by the Ukrainians themselves. "It has to be them. Thousands upon thousands of Ukrainian citizens have died, have lost everything", she stressed, insisting that "only Ukrainians can say to what extent they are willing to concede" at a hypothetical negotiating table.

The Border Guard, which in times of war is subordinated to the command of the Armed Forces, is a crucial element in the country's defence, as it is responsible for protecting its land, river, and sea borders.
