(BOWIE, Md.) - Bowie State University alumna Monica Goldson was selected as the new President and Chief Executive Officer of Junior Achievement of Greater Washington, becoming the first Black woman to ascend to the role in the organization's history.
Goldson graduated from Bowie State with a master's degree in education administration in 2000, and she credited her experience at the university with giving her the information and tools that propelled her 30-year career in teaching and education.
"One thing I love about HBCUs is that you're going to get a well-rounded experience where you're going to have the opportunity to talk about the issues plaguing a community that is predominantly Black and brown," said Goldson. "They're going to give you the tools and strategies to be successful in that area. Bowie State did a fabulous job of giving me those experiences."
Goldson has a long and established track record in education. She started as a math teacher at Suitland High School before rising through the ranks to become the CEO for Prince George's County Public Schools, a $2.4 billion enterprise and the 20th largest school district in the nation.
As the new leader for Junior Achievement, Goldson hopes to expand on the nonprofit's mission to empower students with financial literacy, entrepreneurship skills, and career coaching, which she first encountered while working at PGCPS.
"I'm making sure I start out with the ball rolling," said Goldson. "My goal is to create a robust ecosystem that's going to enhance our existing programs but also helps us to develop new initiatives that address the ever-evolving need of the students we encounter every day."
