By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:
WHEREAS, myocarditis-an inflammation of the heart muscle - affects an estimated 10 to 20 individuals per 100,000 people annually in the United States, meaning hundreds of Virginians may experience this condition each year; and
WHEREAS, myocarditis is a leading cause of sudden cardiac death in young people, accounting for up to 12% of cases among individuals under age 30, underscoring the importance of early recognition and treatment; and
WHEREAS, Virginia's hospitals and cardiology specialists play a critical role in diagnosing myocarditis, which can present with symptoms ranging from chest pain and shortness of breath to life-threatening arrhythmias; and
WHEREAS, early detection and timely medical care significantly improve outcomes, yet myocarditis is frequently underdiagnosed due to its variable presentation and overlap with common viral illnesses; and
WHEREAS, ongoing research-including work supported by the National Institutes of Health and academic medical centers serving Virginia-continues to advance understanding of myocarditis and improve therapeutic options; and
WHEREAS, increased public awareness helps Virginians recognize symptoms, seek prompt care, and support individuals recovering from myocarditis, who may face long-term cardiac monitoring and rehabilitation; and
WHEREAS, the month of April provides an opportunity to educate communities, support affected families, and promote research and prevention strategies that protect heart health across the Commonwealth;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Abigail D. Spanberger, do hereby recognize April 2026, as MYOCARDITIS AWARENESS MONTH in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens
