As Trump Pushes Trade War with Canada, Rosen Meets with Consul General of Canada

LAS VEGAS, NV - U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV), a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, met with the Consul General of Canada in Los Angeles, Sylvie Bédard, to discuss the current relationship between Nevada and Canada, as well as the importance of Canadian visitors and products to Nevada's economy. This meeting comes as Donald Trump announced a new 50 percent tariff on a long list of Canadian goods. Trump's continued gratuitous attacks on Canada have also impacted Nevada's tourism industry, with international visitation to Las Vegas dropping 17.4 percent last year.

"From tourism to agriculture, Canada plays a critical role in Nevada's economy. Our tourism, manufacturing, and agriculture sectors all rely heavily on Canadian visitors and imports," said Senator Rosen. "Donald Trump's reckless attacks on one of our strongest allies and largest trading partners are needlessly hurting businesses, raising prices, and decreasing tourism. I am glad to have met with the Consul General of Canada, and will continue pushing to ensure that we maintain a healthy, fair relationship with our allies to the north."

Since the start of the Trump Administration, Senator Rosen has pushed back against Trump's reckless and illegal tariffs, and has been one of the strongest advocates for maintaining our historic partnership with Canada. Last year, she sent a letter urging the Trump Administration to reverse its decision to impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico. During a Senate hearing in June, Senator Rosen discussed the impact of Trump's tariffs and decreased international travel on Nevada. Senator Rosen has also introduced several bills to protect Nevadans from rising costs associated with tariffs, including the Housing Tariff Exclusion Act and the No Tariffs on Groceries Act.
