FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Verona Police Department Prevents Telephone Scam, Protects Victim from Financial Loss

Verona, WI - August 28, 2025
The Verona Police Department is proud to announce the successful prevention of a telephone scam that could have cost a would-be victim $8,000.

Earlier today, a Verona Police Officer learned a neighboring agency was investigating a telephone scam involving a fraudulent caller posing as a law enforcement "deputy." The scammer instructed the victim to withdraw a large sum of money from her bank account, threatening her with a citation if she failed to comply. The victim was coerced not to hang up the phone, so the victim's family was unable to communicate with the victim and convince her she was being scammed.

Acting swiftly, Verona officers began checking financial institutions and located the victim at a bank in Verona, where she had just withdrawn $8,000. The officer intervened, and the victim was able to return the money to her account.

The Verona Police Department wants to remind all residents:

  • Law enforcement agencies will never demand cash payments over the phone.
  • No legitimate officer or deputy will threaten arrest or citations in exchange for money.

If you receive a suspicious call demanding money or personal information, hang up and contact your local law enforcement agency immediately.
