Roxborough Memorial Hospital Podiatry Team Earns Second Place at ACFAS Conference for Popliteal Nerve Block Research

PHILADELPHIA (April 3, 2026)- Roxborough Memorial Hospital congratulates Dr. Anushka Ramnani, DPM, a podiatry resident in the Roxborough Memorial Hospital residency program, and attending physicians Dr. Larry Goss, DPM, FACFAS, and Dr. Derick Waldner, DO, for their successful presentation at the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) annual conference. The ACFAS meeting-the nation's largest gathering of podiatric surgeons with nearly 2,300 attendees-featured the latest advances in foot and ankle care, including sessions on Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) for the lower extremity and a strong emphasis on clinical research.

Dr. Ramnani's poster, titled "A Comparative Study of Popliteal Nerve Block Approaches and Guidance Modalities," earned 2nd place in the Scientific Format category among numerous entries. This study highlights that ultrasound guidance offers a more effective method for administering local anesthetic to the popliteal region for lower-extremity procedures, potentially reducing postoperative opioid requirements and enhancing patient outcomes.

Additionally, Chief Podiatry Resident Dr. Catur Chan presented his posters at the event, further underscoring his commitment to advancing clinical knowledge in the field. His presentations included a case report review on Necrotizing Fasciitis in patients with HIV and diabetic foot infections, as well as a study on lead arthropathy of the ankle following gunshot wounds. The contributions from Dr. Chan and Dr. Ramnani reflect thorough research and clinical acumen, highlighting the importance of addressing complex conditions in podiatric practice.

Shawn Parekh, CEO of Roxborough Memorial Hospital, stated: "We are immensely proud of Dr. Ramnani, Dr. Goss, and Dr. Waldner for their remarkable contributions to perioperative pain management and clinical research. Their work exemplifies our institution's commitment to clinical excellence, innovation, and patient-centered care. Recognition at a national forum like ACFAS underscores the caliber of our clinicians and the impactful work being accomplished at Roxborough Memorial Hospital. We also commend Dr. Chan for his dedication to advancing clinical knowledge in podiatric practice."

About the Research

The poster compared different popliteal nerve block approaches and guidance modalities, highlighting ultrasound as a superior tool for precise anesthetic delivery. Findings suggest potential benefits in reducing opioid exposure, shortening recovery times, and enhancing perioperative pain control for patients undergoing lower-extremity surgery.
