A 22-year-old Smyrna man who fled from South Precinct patrol officers overnight, nearly striking them in the process, is jailed following a brief pursuit that ended on I-40 East. Officers stopped an Infiniti on Murfreesboro Pike at Expressway Park Drive after witnessing a traffic infraction on Lafayette Street.
Officers saw and smelled marijuana coming from the Infiniti and requested the driver, Jabbar Williams, and his two passengers exit the vehicle. Williams instead sped off, nearly hitting the officers as he fled towards I-40.
Williams continued on the interstate for a half mile at nearly 80 mph before crashing into the median wall. He then got out and ran into oncoming traffic before he was apprehended. His passengers remained inside the Infiniti.
Marijuana was recovered during his arrest.
Williams is charged with assault on an officer, felony and misdemeanor evading arrest, marijuana possession, leaving the scene of an accident and misdemeanors for speeding and stop sign violation. He remains jailed on $47,000 bond.
