How do you report on a war when international journalists are denied access to the territory and those who live there are targeted, threatened and obstructed from doing their work? How can reliable, balanced information be guaranteed to the public in a media blackout? "How to tell the story of the war in Gaza?" is a staged production proposed by the French media outlet Les 3 Ours and Reporters Without Borders (RSF). On stage, Jonathan Dagher, journalist and head of RSF's Middle East desk, will be joined via video by Ola al-Zaanoun, RSF's Gaza correspondent.
International journalists are prohibited from entering Gaza by the Israeli authorities. Those reporting on the war on the ground are killed, displaced and deprived of decent living conditions. In a year and a half of war, nearly 220 Palestinian journalists have been killed by the Israeli army, including at least 68 while carrying out their duties, according to RSF's constant monitoring of the situation.
In "How to tell the story of the war in Gaza?"Jonathan Dagher offers a personal account of his work as a journalist operating from Paris to document one of the most closely-watched conflict zones in the world. Through investigations, fact-checking and first-hand accounts, he describes the challenges of practicing journalism from afar, all while juggling ethical considerations, operational constraints, and intense exposure to pressure and propaganda. His narrative is interwoven with that of Ola al-Zaanoun whose video testimonies capture her experience on the ground - as a news professional, mother and resident of Gaza.
"For more than two years, RSF has been reporting on the realities faced by journalists in Gaza, filing complaints with international bodies in response to the scale of crimes committed by the Israeli army and supporting the profession despite the challenges posed by the wholly unlawful closure of the Palestinian territory since October 2023. With 40 years of experience, the NGO has been working behind the scenes as part of a collective effort to document the unprecedented nature of the war in Gaza and the dangerous precedents set by targeting press freedom with impunity worldwide.. Telling this story on stage is a continuation of our work: to inform, build connections, organise and foster direct dialogue.
"Partnering with RSF allows us to show how news is produced in all its complexity on a subject that has become one of the most controversial and sensitive subjects in all newsrooms. It is also an opportunity to reveal the inner workings of RSF, which is both an NGO and an international media outlet, and rebuild dialogue between journalists and their audiences, as well as between people themselves.
