Together WE build safer communities

  • Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board is prioritising community safety through partnerships, local initiatives, and shared responsibility.

  • Free safety resources, including multilingual Be Safe, Feel Safe booklets, are available to help residents protect themselves and their whānau.

  • Initiatives include better lighting, CCTV, safety programmes, and working with police and community groups to build safer neighbourhoods.

Everyone deserves to feel safe - at home, at school, at the shops, or simply walking down the street. That's why safety is one of Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board's top priorities, with a focus on building strong, connected communities where people look out for one another.

"Safety isn't just a box we tick - it is one of the local board's top three priorities," says Chair Apulu Reece Autagavaia. "It's a big part of our Welcome and Local Board Plans, but more importantly, we want every person in our community to feel safe and cared for, whether they're at home, out with their whānau, or just going about their day."

After a recent safety meeting with local partners and Counties Manukau Police, the board is sharing key information to help prevent crime and support community safety.

Counties Manukau Police have produced Be Safe, Feel Safe booklets. These booklets are available in Korean, Samoan, Chinese, Te Reo, Tongan, and English. Videos can be viewed here. They cover important topics such as:

  • Safer neighbourhoods

  • Preparing for emergencies

  • Protecting your home and belongings

  • Keeping yourself and your family safe

  • Online and identity safety

"These resources can really help our communities. Taking time to read them could make all the difference. It works best when we all play a part, and with support from Counties Manukau Police and local partners, we're making safety a shared responsibility across our community," says Apulu.

The board works closely with iwi, community groups, police, and other partners and regularly review progress and listen to community feedback to keep improving, and has been involved supporting or providing several initiatives including:

  • Better lighting to brighten dark spots
  • CCTV where it's needed most
  • Safety programs for seniors, youth, and families
  • Safer crossings near schools
  • More patrols with help from police and community groups
  • Welcoming parks and centres where people can connect
  • Encouraging neighbours to know each other
  • Free community events across the area
  • Sharing safety info in many languages
