Austin’s New Genesis Assembly of God Church Proposed for Landmark Status

New Genesis Assembly of God Baptist Church, at 1400 N. Laramie Ave. in Austin, would be designated as an official Chicago landmark under a proposal introduced to City Council today by Mayor Brandon Johnson.

Designed by Chicago architect Moritz F. Strauch and completed in 1924 as the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, the property was built in phases through 1949, which contributed to its eclectic Neo-Gothic design. Noteworthy architectural features include a Lannon stone exterior and four-story tower that houses bells cast in 1898.

The New Genesis Assembly of God congregation moved into the building in 1997.

The designation would protect all exterior elevations of the building.
