Bridging child rights and environmental policy

FRA spoke about the impact of climate change on children and their rights at an online conference on 29 April on climate rights for children in Europe. FRA stressed the need towards a fundamental rights-compliant European Green Deal that calls for citizens' active participation, including children, as child participation is also an important part of Integrated Child Protection Systems.

Eurochild, ombudspersons and partner organisations conveyed the strong messages by children on how much they are affected by climate change and how important it is for them to have a voice in environmental policies. However, the difficulties for children to access environmental justice became apparent through contributions by the Children Rights International Network (CRIN) as well as current case law.

The European Network of Environmental Law Organisations organised the conference to discuss access rights of children. It also presented outcomes from the ENRICH project on Environment, Rights, Children.

The project aims at raising awareness of how the climate crisis and children's rights intersect and to advance children's right to have a voice in environmental/climate change matters.
