TAMPA, FL (March 25, 2026)- On Wednesday, March 25, 2026, the Tampa Police Department terminated the employment of Ruth Cate.

Chief Lee Bercaw promoted Cate to the role of Assistant Chief in February 2025. The position of Assistant Chief represents a critical executive leadership role within the Tampa Police Department, requiring a high level of trust, sound judgment, and strong leadership to guide the organization's direction, operations, and standards of professionalism.

On March 20, 2026, Chief Lee Bercaw and the Employee Relations Manager met with Cate to inform her that, as an at-will employee, she would be terminated from her position for failing to meet the expectations required for the role. Cate requested the opportunity to retire and utilize accrued annual leave. In recognition of her 29 years of service, she was granted that opportunity and the ability to communicate her retirement to staff on Monday, March 23, 2026.

Instead, on March 23, 2026, Cate raised concerns alleging retaliation and indicated she had retained legal counsel. At that time, the department placed Cate on administrative leave to allow HR to review her concerns, consistent with standard protocol.

On March 24, 2026, Cate and her attorney met with Human Resources, and made new complaints that will be reviewed pursuant to established procedures by the City of Tampa. Cate's allegations do not affect the decision to terminate her employment.

"The Tampa Police Department remains committed to fairness, professionalism, and the equitable treatment of all employees," said Chief Lee Bercaw. "We will continue to uphold the highest standards of accountability and service to the department and the community. The department is made up of strong, qualified, and well-trained leaders who will ensure a smooth transition while remaining fully committed to our mission of keeping our community safe."
