MWRD Storm Update

This past week, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago's (MWRD) Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) captured approximately 6 billion gallons of combined sewage.

Currently, McCook Reservoir is approximately 90% full and the Thornton Composite Reservoir is approximately 7% full.

The initial forecast for this rain event was 0.60 inches but the actual rainfall in some areas significantly exceeded the forecast with 3.1 inches falling at Stickney in a short period of time. A reversal to Lake Michigan did not occur as conditions did not allow for opening the locks.

Before severe storms, the MWRD lowers the level of the Chicago Area Waterway System as staff work around the clock managing the excess water.

The MWRD will continue to partner with municipalities to implement local stormwater projects, including green infrastructure, to help our area during rainfall events.
