Will you be able to live an active lifestyle at age 70 and onwards?
We'd all like to confidently answer yes to this question but for the majority, it's unfortunately out of our hands. Even if we live healthy lives, health risks that develop silently and without symptoms can appear out of nowhere and cause immense damage to our bodies and future wellbeing.
The state of modern healthcare doesn't help matters. Reactive, fragmented and increasingly expensive - many opt to not visit the doctor for a check-up of their health at all. And even those who do and get the all clear from their GP may still carry a niggling feeling that something isn't quite right in their body.
Tech entrepreneur Nick Lenten was thinking about exactly this problem when considering what to do next. He had served in product leadership roles at Google and as the first employee, CTO and CMO of e-commerce company Coolblue (contributing to a $1BN exit). He saw an opportunity to build a company that made it easier to access preventative MRI scans and blood tests that offer more data to understand what's wrong in our bodies, but also how to optimise to live longer and healthier. He took the challenge on by bringing together a team of rockstar ex-tech executives, medical doctors and healthcare builders to launch Ahead Health in 2024.
Deeper health insights with a best-in-class digital experience
Many healthcare companies today are weighing up how to use the latest AI breakthroughs in their products and services. Ahead Health is pioneering an amazing use case. Using a proprietary AI platform, the Ahead Health team analyse the results of advanced MRI scans and in-depth blood tests to check biomarkers (potential indicators of disease in the body) to catch health issues sooner than standard check-ups. The list of health risks that can be detected with this approach is staggering. Check it out for yourself.
The results are deeper, more personalised insights into organ health and body composition that act as steps towards long-term well-being. As an example, Ahead Health analysis of an MRI scan on Nick, the founder, pinpointed the root cause of lower back pain he'd been suffering with and allowed him to treat the issue.
Stories just like that are growing in number as Ahead Health scales. The company is finding success by delivering an overall service that users love. While Ahead Health's tech is important, so is its seamless end-to-end patient experience. In partnership with brand-name clinics across Switzerland and Germany, users simply book appointments online, visit their nearest clinic for a 30-minute scan, test or both and then receive their digital health report that offers actionable data in one place rather than medical jargon spread across PDFs. And real doctors are involved every step of the way.
Becoming Europe's AI-powered health operating system
By pairing state-of-the-art biomarker analysis to spot health risks sooner with a slick patient experience, Ahead Health is in a great position to become Europe's personal health operating system. That's why we led its new $6 million raise. You can read more about the round in Sifted here.
Commenting on the round, Jelmer de Jong, Partner at RTP Global, said:
"There's enormous untapped potential in the preventative health space, which is quickly emerging as one of the most exciting applications of AI in healthcare. Nick and his team combine operator experience with healthcare expertise to keep building on their success and serve the growing number of consumers prioritising proactive health management. We're very proud to back them on their journey."
The Ahead Health team will use the new funding to partner with more clinics in Germany, Austria and the Netherlands. There are also plans to offer new types of tests for users to book and make new engineering hires.
We can't wait to see where this team of company builders go next and how the expansion of Ahead Health's service supports more individual journeys to long-term well-being.
