In an Aug. 12 conversation with Spectrum News 1, UCLA psychologist Carrie Bearden spoke about UCLA research projects that have been frozen, including a study she is leading on early signs of mental illness in young people.
"The research doesn't just pick up where it left off," she said. "If it's just a delay, it's an unnecessary delay that's impacting the search for cures."
On the suspension of grants to training programs that help fund the work of early-career scientists and provide advanced scientific training, she said: "The damage this does to young people and their careers really cannot be overstated."
The federal government's demand of $1 billion from UCLA would devastate the nation's best public university, cut off lifesaving care, halt tech and economic growth, and reduce educational access.
From medical therapies that save lives to technologies that grow the U.S. economy and research that protects our national security, Americans across the country depend on UCLA and the University of California.
Right now, we need your help. We must stand together to protect our students, staff, faculty and our mission.
