Oklahoma State University's College of Education and Human Sciences honored the hard work and dedication of Oklahoma teachers with on-field recognition at the OSU vs. Baylor football game on Sept. 27.
From more than 700 entries, 10 Oklahoma teachers were randomly selected to receive tickets to the game and a Teach Orange prize pack. The group of teachers includes early childhood, elementary and secondary teachers representing small and large school districts across Oklahoma.
Mark Stone, an OSU graduate who teaches biology and AP environmental science at Okmulgee High School, was one of the 10 teachers honored. He explained why the recognition was important for him.
"It really was an honor to be recognized," Stone said. "The people who show up for these kids don't need the recognition, but it helps keep teachers in the classroom when they do get that pat on the back every once in a while."
Stone described his experience teaching and said the most impactful thing a teacher can do is be present for the students.
"Supplying support, even if it's just offering an ear to listen, can change a kid's life," Stone said. "Just being there for the kids is what's really impactful."
Crista McCann, a high school art teacher at Bethany Public Schools, shared her experience. She said it felt extra special stepping onto the field, as she was a former Stillwater resident.
"Taking time to focus on the teachers, it's truly inspiring, and it means something - especially to me. It can get hard, and it can really take it out of you," she said. "Taking the time to recognize those of us who are showing up for these kids really makes a difference."
For McCann, she can find love in the art she teaches.
"I'm in a subject matter that teaches kids to find what's beautiful, and to push the limits so they can be creative," she said. "I love it when a kid is like 'I didn't know I could do this' and 'I didn't know I would be good at this' because they are starting to see those lightbulbs turn on."
Dr. Jon Pedersen, the dean of the College of Education and Human Sciences, shared why the college values the importance and impact of Oklahoma teachers and why it will continue to honor them.
"We are proud to recognize this group of dedicated educators who are igniting curiosity, building confidence and inspiring children in classrooms across Oklahoma," he said. "This ceremony and the Teach Orange initiatives are a small way for us to celebrate teachers and express our gratitude for the investment they are making in their students and the future of our state."
