SALINAS MAN SENTENCED TO FOUR YEARS IN PRISON FOR TAKING A VEHICLE AND EVADING OFFICERS

Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine M. Pacioni announced today that Judge Jennifer O'Keefe sentenced Henry Isidro Lechuga, age 36 of Salinas, to four years in state prison for one count of taking a vehicle with priors and one count of evading officers while driving recklessly.

On May 9, 2026, Salinas police officers observed Lechuga, who was a wanted suspect for an outstanding arrest warrant, parked in front of 335 Navajo Drive. The vehicle was occupied by a female driver, and Lechuga was in the passenger seat. Officers advised Lechuga that he was under arrest, but Lechuga refused to follow commands. The female driver complied with officers and exited the vehicle. Lechuga jumped over to the driver's seat, grabbed the keys, stole the vehicle, and fled. Officers initiated a vehicle pursuit. Lechuga proceeded to evade officers, drove through multiple stop signs, ran red lights, traveled on opposite lanes, reached speeds up to 60 miles per hour in residential areas, reached speeds up to 100 miles per hour on Highway 101, and nearly collided with a bicyclist. Eventually, Lechuga exited the vehicle and fled on foot in the backyard of a residence. Officers set up a perimeter and conducted searches in numerous backyards, but the search was unsuccessful and a warrant went out for Lechuga's arrest. He was subsequently taken into custody.
