Page Turner Tuesdays: Twenty-One Steps

Yesterday was Memorial Day, a day in which we honor those who gave everything for our country - and reflect on the power of remembrance. The children's book Twenty-One Steps: Guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier by Jeff Gottesfeld is a moving tribute and a beautiful read in honor of Memorial Day. This book brings to life the story of the sentinels who stand watch over the Tomb at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.

With reverent text and striking illustrations by Matt Tavares, this picture book captures the deep respect and unwavering dedication of the guards, reminding us that behind every step is a promise: that we will never forget.

You can find Twenty-One Steps: Guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in e-book format in the IDEA by ICfL collection via the Libby or Sora app.

In addition to sharing facts, this book invites readers into a sacred ritual of honor. From the crisp uniforms to the silent precision of the soldiers' march, Gottesfeld shows us how every detail matters. Readers young and old will come away with a deeper appreciation for the soldiers who have served, and for those who serve still.

Whether you're sharing it with a young reader or picking it up yourself, Twenty-One Steps is a powerful way to reflect on the meaning of service and sacrifice. It's a story of commitment, courage, and the enduring legacy of those we remember today.

Recommended for ages 7 and up.
