Reminder of Mandatory Brake Check Areas for Big Rigs

Placer County - Caltrans is reminding commercial truck drivers of the importance to stop and check equipment at designated areas, including the mandatory brake check area along westbound Interstate 80 (I-80) near Nyack.

Brake check compliance is a critical safety measure that helps to prevent brake failures that may result in a larger incident like a roadside fire, wildfire or major traffic collision.

Stopping to check brakes ensures that drivers can inspect and adjust their brakes before entering steep downhill grades.

Signs and changeable message boards are posted along the corridor indicating the requirement. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) maintains active enforcement and commercial drivers may be subject to citations and additional inspection requirements for failing to comply. The brake check does not apply to cars and pickup trucks.

"Safe Stopping and Parking Places" are listed under title 13 § 1153 of the California Code of Regulations (CCR), which is the official compilation and publication of the regulations adopted, amended or repealed by state agencies pursuant to the Administrative Procedure Act (APA). Properly adopted regulations that have been filed with the Secretary of State have the force of law.

Additional required inspection stops within Caltrans District 3 include the Donner Summit Rest Areas along I-80, the brake check area along U.S. Highway 50 near Echo Summit and the Luther Pass chain control area along State Route 89.

Caltrans District 3 is responsible for maintaining and operating 4,385 lane miles in 11 Sacramento Valley and Northern Sierra counties. Caltrans reminds motorists to "Be Work Zone Alert" and slow in construction zones for the safety of travelers and crews performing these improvements.
