PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas (Jan. 23, 2025) - In the early morning hours of Monday, January 20, 2025, our Prairie View A&M University community lost a pioneer, changemaker, and the epitome of a Panther alumnus. Fred Newhouse's accolades as an Olympian track star are internationally renowned. His service to the University as an alumnus, though less prominent due to his humility, was marked by character, integrity, and a commitment to supporting the University and its students.

A distinguished alumnus of Prairie View A&M University, Fred exemplified excellence both on and off the track. As a gold medal Olympian and a champion in his professional and philanthropic endeavors, his life was a testament to the values of hard work, integrity, and service.

Fred Newhouse's contributions to the Prairie View A&M Foundation were profound and enduring. As a founding member and trustee, Fred was instrumental in shaping the vision and mission of the Foundation, working tirelessly to ensure its success. His roles as a Trustee, member of the Executive Committee, and Chair of the Investment Committee underscored his exceptional dedication and financial stewardship, upholding the Foundation's standard of excellence.

Fred's generosity was evident in his establishment of the Rhonda and Frederick Newhouse Endowed Scholarship Fund, which has provided invaluable support to countless PVAMU students. His deep connection to the University was further demonstrated through decades of philanthropic contributions to PVAMU Athletics and other University initiatives, with over 27 years of giving.

His commitment to providing a path to excellence for our youth is immeasurable. Through his work with the College of Agriculture, Department of Athletics, and community activities, students will benefit from his generosity for generations. His dedication to youth and community service epitomizes the University motto, "Prairie View Produces Productive People."

During the 2019 Fall commencement ceremony, 8th President Ruth J. Simmons awarded him the University's highest alumni honor, the Distinguished Alumnus Medal. His commitment to upholding the integrity of the University is admirable and serves as an example to all alumni.
